Crime and Suspense Anthology I:

2005-2006

The Crime and Suspense ezine has been in operation since October 1, 2005. Each month since that date, both famous and infamous (umm, scratch that... I mean "lesser-known") authors have brought you, the Reader, gems of crime, mystery and suspense fiction of the shorter variety.

Crime and Suspense has grown from primarily a hobby vehicle for me into a well-known Internet venue for quality short fiction in the genres listed above. So, I have selected fifteen stories from the first fifteen months of operation and, with the authors’ permission, put them together in an anthology. I wish I could put all the stories from that time into a book, but from its inception through the end of 2006, over 113 stories were published in the ezine itself, plus a few more in writing contests sponsored by the ezine.

Here you will find stories that surprise you, make you laugh, make you squirm and make your heart squeeze with fear and empathy. I hope you enjoy the stories in this anthology. I also hope you will drop by the Crime and Suspense ezine, located on the Internet at http://www.crimeandsuspense.com

What others are saying...

"Crime and Suspense is one of the web's most reliable e-zines for short fiction.  Now editor Tony Burton has gathered the zine's best stories from 2005-2006 and put them into one volume.  Fans of crime fiction in general and the short story in particular will find plenty to like in this fine collection."

--Bill Crider, author of the
Sheriff Dan Rhodes mystery series and
We'll Always Have Murder -- A Humphrey Bogart Mystery

"Terrific! These stories are as diverse, inventive, and original as any collection I’ve seen. The victims range from a mobster’s wife in New Jersey to a titled nobleman in the English countryside, and the weapons vary from a chain saw to a trained hawk. If you like variety in short mystery stories, you won’t be disappointed by any of these well-written gems."

Earl Staggs, author of
Memory of a Murder and
Derringer Award winner

"These fifteen short stories have a little bit of everything: PIs and amateurs, cheaters and liars, thugs and threats, murder and mayhem, and even a vengeful woman trapped in a well. The writing is tight and the twists just keep on coming. Don’t miss this terrific collection by some of the most talented short story writers in the business!"

--Lori L. Lake, author of the
Dez Reilly police procedural series,
Snow Moon Rising, and
winner of the 2007 Alice B. Reader medal
